Making schools and daycares green with the city of Antwerp

Children in the city don’t always live within walking distance from parks or green playspaces. To give every child the opportunity to enjoy a green playspace, the city of Antwerp encourages schools and daycares to transform their traditional playground into a natural and adventurous space.

For participants of the Child in the City International Seminar in Antwerp, the city of Antwerp has organised an additional field trip for those planning to stay longer in Antwerp. The cycling trip takes place Wednesday 22 May 2019. Starting at 9:00 am participants would meet at Antwerp Central Station and bike to several natural school and daycare playgrounds.

The field trip visits will be quite diverse playgrounds, from small to large, from completely natural to a combination with pavement, from very adventurous to more controlled. There is time to talk to the people involved, to learn what made their project a success. The trip ends where it begins, with participants returning by bike to Antwerp Centraal station by 16:00 pm. A fee of € 25 euro would provide you with a bike, lunch and snack for the day.

As previously mentioned, during the two-day seminar 20-21 May 2019 five field trips are part of the programme. There are two walking trips and three cycling trips. The field trips provide delegates with an opportunity to see first hand how the city of Antwerp engages with the seminar’s theme of ‘Children in the Sustainable city’.
