A bicycle playground for Vienna
How can we foster the autonomous mobility and cycling skills of children living in the city and promote physical activity? How can we facilitate a safe but exciting approach to cycling for urban kids?
Cycling will play an integral role in our future urban mobility. For this reason, cycling should come naturally to children and youths. Alec Hager won second prize as well as the audience award at the Vienna Business Agency’s ideas competition “Kinder, Kinder! New Design Ideas for a Playful City“ for his concept “Radspielpatz“ (Bicycle Playground).
The bicycle playground functions as a meeting point, a sports and recreational facility and a training course. Children and youths can practice their cycling skills under the guidance of trainers. Low-threshold obstacles help the young cyclists train their skills and prepare them for characteristic Viennese road features, including a cobblestone simulator or a tram track coach.

The ideas competition “Kinder, Kinder! New Design Ideas for a Playful City“ invited creative minds, producers, and manufacturers from Vienna and beyond to submit new concepts, strategies, products and services offering solutions to the following questions, based on the way children (might) experience the city: How can responsibility and commitment become a joint venture; how can we foster a happy coexistence, and how can we protect children’s rights so that the everyday life of children in the city becomes enriched now and in future?
