City of Ghent
Ghent, a pocket-sized metropolis
With its 252,000 inhabitants, Ghent is the second largest city in Flanders. It offers a rare combination of an intimate compact city and the openness of a metropolis. It is a versatile city, historic and yet contemporary at the same time. With numerous museums, cultural centres, festivals, monuments and the title of âUnesco creative city of musicâ, it is a genuine city of culture.
Over 70,000 students make Ghent the largest student city in Flanders, including Ghent University that ranks 71 on theâ2015 Academic Ranking of World Universitiesâ. The young heart of the city boosts innovation and creativity. This is reflected by Ghentâs economy and its commitment to the fields of biotech, cleantech, ICT, materials, logistics and health care. The cityâs seaport provides over 60,000 jobs and generates an added value of 6,7 billion euros. Ghent aims to be an open, sustainable, smart and child friendly city.
