New UK play association head vows to ‘build on its success’
The United Kingdom’s Association of Play Industries has entered into a new era with the appointment of Dr Amanda Gummer as its new Independent Chair.
A psychologist and CEO of research consultancy Fundamentally Children, Dr Gummer has over 20 years of experience in working with children and families.
She replaces Mark Hardy, who has stepped down from the post after nearly 10 years at the association which is the main professional trade body for the UK manufacturing play sector, and campaigns at highest levels for policy recognition for play.
Dr Gummer said she was ‘thrilled’ to be on board, and was keen to build on the API’s success in recent years. “The need for children to play outdoors freely and safely has never been so important and I’m looking forward to working with our members to promote the UK play industry and to campaign for every child’s right to everyday play.”
Amanda replaces Mark Hardy, who steps down after almost ten years. Under Mark’s leadership, the association has launched multiple play campaigns gaining national press and TV coverage, grown the API’s profile and championed a diverse and representative Executive Committee.
Mark Hardy added: “Amanda has a wealth of experience and will be a breath of fresh air to the industry and beyond,” says Mark. “The new perspective she brings will be invaluable and I’m excited to see what the API achieves next under her leadership.”
All very well and good and best of luck to Dr Gummer and all of the API. To suggest that this organisation represents the UK’s play sector is inaccurate
API is a trade body for profit-making companies that supply and install fixed-play equipment and it represents manufacturers’ interests
It does not represent the UK’s play sector which is served by Play England; Playboard Northern Ireland; Play Scotland and Play Wales. Additionally, there are International Play Assoc branches in all four nations
