You can now register online to attend – in person – the Child in the City International Seminar which takes place in September.
How to make children’s rights mainstream in local policy planning? is the title of this year’s event, in the Portuguese city of Cascais.
Children’s rights have since been referenced in many different local policy documents and progress has been made, but many cities still struggle with the translation and implementation of children’s rights.
This seminar, from September 9-10, aims to take the next steps in both theoretically reflecting on children’s rights and implementing the convention in specific policy contexts.
‘This is a change we can all be part of’
Speakers will share their experiences of how they have attempted to bring children’s rights into the mainstream, what challenges they have faced, and, faced with a pandemic which has literally changed the world, how have they been able to engage with young people?
Key speakers will include:
- Õzlemnur Ataol, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands
- Ana Lourenço, Child Support Institute, Portugal
- Rianne Jansens, University College Cork (Ireland) and Luleå University (Sweden)
- Anna Schledorn, City of Regensburg, Germany
In an open invitation to all those with a stake in young people’s futures, Carlos Carreira, the Mayor of Cascais (pictured), said the city was proud to be hosting the event.
“We get into the third decade of this century, and human rights are still far from granted for millions of people – especially women and children,” he said.
“In every nation, in every city, in our neighbourhoods, or just across our street, human rights are denied to our children and young citizens. Some are forced to marry. Some are forbidden to go to school. Others suffer physical and psychological violence.
“Fighting abuse and cruelty is an imperative of humanity. Safeguarding children’s rights is a legal and political obligation. To give a voice to those unheard in our communities is an ethical and moral imperative. This is a change we can all be part of,” he added.
